R-Biopharm offers a sandwich enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of macadamia nut in raw and processed food such as bakery products, ice cream, cereals and chocolate. The limit of detection of RIDASCREEN®FAST Macadamia (product code R6852) is 0.64 ppm (mg/kg).

The test shows a low cross-reactivity to some beans (kidney bean: 0.047%; pinto bean: 0.038%; white bean: 0.001%), but no cross-reactivity to other nuts such as walnut, cashew, almond, peanut, brazil nut, hazelnut and pistachio was observed.

Nuts are among the most common food causing allergic reactions in children and adults. Comparable to other nut allergies, macadamia nut allergy can result in a wide range of reactions, from moderate symptoms up to anaphylaxis.

According to the European Allergen Regulation EU 2007/68/EG, macadamia nuts have to be declared in food when added as an ingredient. Similar regulations are in place in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
