Salmonella, a Gram-negative bacilli, is estimated to cause one million foodborne illnesses in the United States each year. In order to ensure our food and water are safe for consumption, rapid and reliable detection methods are critical.

A recent review summarizes the advances made towards faster detection of Salmonella from food and environmental sources. Molecular methods such as qPCR, whole genome sequencing and metagenomics are now emerging as the methods of choice because they are rapid and reliable.
