Cut solvent use by 50% with the Revised ASTM D664 for TAN/TBN in petrochemical samples

Cut solvent use by 50% with the Revised ASTM D664 for TAN/TBN in petrochemical samples

September 24, 2018

The determination of the acid number plays a significant role in the analysis of petroleum products. This is manifested in the numerous standard procedures in use over the world (ASTM, DIN, IP, ISO, etc.). These procedures differ mainly in the composition of the used solvents and titrants.

In collaboration with the ASTM, Metrohm has revised and developed a new version of ASTM D664 for the potentiometric determination of TAN/TBN. This version allows you to

  • Reduce the required amount of solvent from 125 ml to 60 ml
  • Save costs and reduce waste
  • Significantly improve the accuracy and reproducibility of results

Thermometric titration-can you feel the heat?

Thermometric titration-can you feel the heat?

Thermometric titration is fast, simple to use, rugged, versatile and unique.
In thermometric titration, the temperature change during a chemical reaction is used for the endpoint detection. This temperature change takes place only while the titrant reacts with the analyte. This makes endpoint detection very easy!
Consequently, the thermometric titrator is the ideal solution for difficult samples with complex matrices that cannot be titrated potentiometrically.

Cation suppression in ion chromatography

Trace analysis of cations, amines, and transition metals is possible with or without suppression. However, some applications require particularly high sensitivity of the analysis.
